Giraffe Hat

I'm supposed to be writing an essay for my barbering school but instead here's my take on the giraffe hat. I had bought a pattern a long time ago off of etsy but never really liked the huge horns and ears. So I ended up making my own pattern that was more my style. Cute and simple.



For this pattern I used Lily's Sugar n Crème in yellow and warm brown.
H hook.
Working in a spiral, unless you would like to join at end of round.

0-3 months:
Magic ring.
Round 1: 12 dc in magic ring. (12)
Round 2: 2 dc in each. (24)
Round 3: 2 dc in first stitch, 1 dc in next. Repeat around. (36)
Round 4: 2 dc in first, dc in next 5. Repeat around. (42)
Round 5: 2 dc in first stitch, dc in next 20. Repeat. (44)
Round 6-10: Dc in each. (44)
Stop here and sc around with warm brown if you don't want earflaps. For earflaps skip to bottom.  

3-6 months:
Magic ring.
Round 1: 12 dc in magic ring. (12)
Round 2: 2 dc in each. (24)
Round 3: 2 dc in first stitch, 1 in next. Repeat around. (36)
Round 4: 2 dc in first stitch, dc in next 2. Repeat around. (48)
Round 5-11: Dc in each. (48)
Stop here and sc around with warm brown if you don't want earflaps. For earflaps skip to bottom.

6-9 months:
Magic ring.
Round 1: 12 dc in magic ring. (12)
Round 2: 2 dc in each. (24)
Round 3: 2 dc in first stitch, 1 in next. Repeat around. (36)
Round 4: 2 dc in first stitch, dc in next 2. Repeat around. (48)
Round 5: 2 dc in first, dc in next 11. Repeat around. (52)
Round 6 -12: Dc in each. (52)

9-12 months:

Child:
Magic ring.

Round 5: 2 dc in first, dc in next 3. Repeat around. (60)

Round 7-15: Dc in each. (64)

Teen/ Adult:
Magic ring.

Round 4: 2 dc in first stitch, dc in next 2. Repeat around. (48)
Round 5: 2 dc in first, dc in next 3. Repeat around. (60)
Round 6: 2 dc in first, dc in next 4. Repeat around. (72)
Round 7-16: Dc in each. (72)
Stop here and sc around with warm brown if you don't want earflaps. For earflaps skip to bottom.

Earflaps for 0-3 months – Toddler
Earflap: 

Round 1: Chain 1, sc in next 10, chain 1, turn.
Round 2: Skip first sc and sc in next 9, chain 1, turn.
Round 3: Skip first sc and sc in next 8, chain 1, turn.
Round 4: Skip first sc and sc in next 7, chain 1, turn.
Round 5: Skip first sc and sc in next 6, chain 1, turn.
Round 6: Skip first sc and sc in next 5, chain 1, turn.
Round 7: Skip next sc and sc in next 4, chain 1, turn.
Round 8: Skip next sc and sc in next 3. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Now repeat on opposite side for second earflap. I usually like more spacing in the front. When finished with second earflap. Sc in warm brown around hat putting 3 sc in the corners of earflaps. Which I have pictured here.

Earflaps for child-teen/adult.
Earflap:
Round 1: Chain 1, sc in next 12, chain 1, turn.
Round 2: Skip first sc and sc in next 11, chain 1, turn.
Round 3: Skip first sc and sc in next 10, chain 1, turn.
Round 4: Skip first sc and sc in next 9, chain 1, turn.
Round 5: Skip first sc and sc in next 8, chain 1, turn.
Round 6: Skip first sc and sc in next 7, chain 1, turn.
Round 7: Skip next sc and sc in next 6, chain 1, turn.
Round 8: Skip first sc and sc in next 5, chain 1, turn.
Round 9: Skip first sc and sc in next 4, chain 1, turn.
Round 10: Skip next sc and sc in next 3, fasten off and weave in ends.

Now repeat on opposite side for second earflap. I usually like more spacing in the front. When finished with second earflap. Sc in warm brown around hat putting 3 sc in the corners of earflaps. Which I have pictured above.  Fasten off. Then take 6 or 8 long strands of yarn in whatever color scheme you would like and pull halfways through so that it doubles. Knot then braid and then knot again.

Horns:
Working in spiral.
Magic ring.
Round 1: 10 sc in magic circle. (10)
Round 2: 2 sc in first, 1 in next. Repeat. (15)
Round 2: 2 sc in first, sc in next 2. Repeat. (20)
Round 3: Repeat. (20)
Round 4: Sc 2 tog in next 2, 1 sc in next. Repeat. (12)
Change color.
Round 5: Sc 2 tog, sc in next 3. (9)
Round 6 to desired length: Sc in each. Fasten off and leave long tail to sew on.
Make two.
Stuff with stuffing. I don't sew them up before I sew them on. I leave them open and sew them in the circle shape, I find it helps them stay up best.

Ears:
Working in spiral.
Chain 2.
Round 1: 6 sc in 2nd chain.
Round 2: 2 sc in each. (12)
Round 3: 2 sc in first, 1 sc in next. Repeat. (18)
Round 4-9: 1 sc in each. (18)
Fasten off  and pinch together to sew on. Make sure to leave a long tail.

Heart:
Magic ring:
Ch 3, 3 tc, 3 dc, ch 1, 1 tc, ch 1, 3 dc, 3 tc, ch 3 and sl into ring. Close magic ring. End here for smaller hearts. For larger hearts continue to next round.
Ch 4, 3 dc, 3 sc. Ch 1 and skip ch 1 from last round. 3 sc in tc, ch 1 skip ch 1 from last round. 3 sc, 3 dc, chain 4 and sl st into magic circle. Leave long chain to sew on. You can pick and choose which sizes you would like to do.

For diaper cover I used Crochet A Flowers directions. I followed exactly as is other than changing colors and adding hearts on top of.
